Are Dogs Really Man's Best Friend?

Some people may argue that dogs are not a man's best friend. They may talk about dog attacks, certain breeds, or that they only "love" us because we give them food. I am here to counter these arguments and show why dogs are our true companions.

Certain breeds of dogs are seen as vicious or as fighting dogs, but time has shown that people have bred them this way. Dogs have been bred for certain tasks in a humans life like hunting, personal safety, or show. The dogs themselves did not have a choice on why they were raised the way they were, or how they were taught growing up. For example, a security dog may be raised to attack when told, when a threat is felt, or if their owner is in danger. This action is not an instinct, but it was a learned habit.

Same goes for dog attacks, except they may not be exactly trained to do so. When dogs are being raised they also need to be rewarded for good behavior and reprimanded for bad. If a dog is not put in its place from the start, then bad habits will continue like barking at strangers, eating personal belongings, or not sharing. A dogs personality also depends on who its owner is. If a dog comes from a loving family, then it is more likely to show social tendencies and be nice to strangers. If a dog has an owner who doesn't like other people and is always angry and yelling, then the dog will show aggression towards others. Dogs that come from bad households don't know any better because they don't get the time and attention they need to be socialized. In these cases it is not the dogs fault, but the owner.

It is true that animals will stick around a place because they know there is food. This is an instinct in all animals, and why strays will stick around if they are being fed. Yes we do feed our dogs, but they are our pets so we have to. This is not a reason why they love us even though they understand that we give them their next meal.

It is easy to see that dogs love us for more than food. They enjoy going on walks, car rides, and just being around us. Whenever I come home from college, my dogs are always at the door to greet me and they won't leave my side all day. They follow me around they house and sit at my feet waiting for me to give them attention and pet them. Even though I am not home to see them everyday, they still miss me and they know I love them. My dogs also sleep with me at night when I'm home, and they won't get up and start their day until I do, especially my German Sheppard. He will sit in my bed with me and snuggle, even if I choose to stay in bed until twelve in the afternoon. My other dog, an Australian Sheppard, will go on forty minute car rides just to end up right back at home because the gets to spend time with me. It's also moments like these that bring us closer.

Also, dogs will bring us toys to play with them and they love to cuddle. Whether you're in the mood or not, a dog will always bring over a toy to share with you if they're in the mood. Also, if a dog is raised good then you can play tug of war with them and get a playful growl and gentle biting. With this, you know a dog is enjoying your company and has no intentions of hurting you. Dogs are also the master of cuddle time. If you're laying on the couch then a dog will happily jump up and lay beside you. Or if they're on the floor, they'll love it if you come down a lay with them and pet them. This makes them as happy as it makes us, if not more.

A dogs heart is full of love for people. Tail wags, giving kisses, and always knowing when we're sad are ways dogs can show us that they care. There is more to loving an owner than by getting food. It's a bond that both share and respect because dogs understand what their owners do for them, and we understand what our dogs do for us.
